The Yale EM Residency has created the role of the Resident Director of Medical Student Education to help students better navigate their clerkships in the emergency department.

In addition to this main resident point person,  the EM Resident Mentoring program was created to allow students to reach out to resident mentors who can serve as additional resources to help them achieve their goals in becoming emergency medicine physicians.

Role of the Medical Students
Medical students may submit requests to be paired with a mentor to help them achieve specific goals. These may include guidance regarding how to become involved with emergency medicine clinical experiences or research projects, help with preparation for an EM clerkship or sub-I, and help with applications, personal statements and interviews. The student may be interested in learning more about emergency medicine or may be seriously considering a career in the field.

Role of Resident Mentors
Residents who wish to be mentors for medical students will submit their email addresses to the EMIG liaisons. They will be paired with students as requests are submitted. The mentor’s responsibilities include contacting the assigned student and arranging a mutually convenient time to meet to address the student’s request. If the student has ongoing questions or need for mentorship, he or she may continue the relationship or may be assigned a new mentor if scheduling conflicts arise.
