Class of 2027

Jessica Amoako, MD

Hometown: Tema, Ghana and Union, NJ

College, Medical School, other Schools (include degrees earned): Rutgers University (BA), Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University (MD)

Hobbies/Interest: I love watching Korean Dramas, getting dressed up and going to museums, and tennis. I also enjoy walking around new cities and finding hole in the wall restaurants. I also love Afrobeats and going to the gym and on most days, you’ll most likely find me at the gym unapologetically dancing to Afrobeats during my sets.

Past life:  I lived in Ghana until moving to the US with my family in my teens. I was captain of the tennis team in high school and sometimes like to convince myself that I still got it. I boringly went straight through from college all the way to residency but during those years, I worked as a Biology instructor, an office assistant, and a research assistant. Throughout my journey, I have spent some time mentoring local high school students in New Brunswick, NJ and Kensington, PA navigating the post-high school education system since like me, most were the first in their families to embark the journey.

Academic Interest: Global Health, Ultrasound (mainly Global Ultrasound), Health Disparities in URiM communities, Mentorship for URiM students.

Favorite activities in New Haven: I hear the pizza is pretty good so I will make sure to  stock up on my Lactaid pills when I move.

Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: From my interview day and second looks, it was apparent the support that I will receive from the program. As someone very much involved in DEI, I was impressed with the efforts the program and the University are taking to create diverse spaces to provide equitable care for all. During my 4th year of medical school, I fell in love with Ultrasound and I know that Yale EM will provide me with great teaching and mentorship to delve much more into the Ultrasound space. Also the residents I met are truly amazing and they went above and beyond during the second look and afterwards as well.

Random factoid:  My favorite movie is Lion King to the point where I watch it after every major event in my life. So as of now I’ve watched it over 11 times (yes!! I do count it).

Doug Barber, MD

Hobbies/Interest: fishing for striped bass, bluefish and porgy in Long Island Sound, gardening, playing masters pick-up water polo

Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: Every shift I spent in the Yale ED, I went home with a new role model to aspire to. The faculty and residents are incredibly impressive, with diverse interests and talents, but also supportive and fun to be around. Also, I love living in New Haven, which is a sort of jack-of-all-trades kind of city. You can live a bit outside New Haven and get to enjoy some extra space and still enjoy the food and bars downtown. Outdoorsy activities are never far away and it’s not hard to get to the big cities for a weekend when you want to.

Random factoid: My COVID hobby was spicy-pepper growing – I grew 50 types last year!

Past life:  Born and bred on the outskirts of London, I’ve been in medical school in the UK for the past 6 years and before that I was in high school so I guess you could call me an eternal student.

Academic Interest: Global health, Pediatric EM, Medical Education

Favorite activities in New Haven: I have never been to New Haven, so this is a crazy journey and move across the Atlantic for me. From what I hear the pizza is fantastic, so I am awaiting it eagerly!

Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: I felt really welcomed and supported by all the faculty during my interview. Being able to serve a diverse patient population and being surrounded by a close-knit group of fellow residents is so important to me. Yale offers so much to my future career whether this be through research, international elective opportunities, or impeccable world-class training. I’m so excited to be a part of the team!

Random factoid: I have never lived in the US, but I have made it onto the local news. Our hotel was hit by the edge of a hurricane and caught on fire, luckily everyone was evacuated safely but it was quite the experience.

Favorite activities in New Haven: TBD since I have only just arrived. I have marked many places on google maps to check out including local hikes, beaches, natural areas, pizza and international restaurants as well as many arts and cultural sites!

Academic Interest: All things prehospital and wilderness medicine—vertical rescue, tropical medicine, improving medical access, and devolving aspects of TBI care from  tertiary care to the EMS setting.

Favorite activities in New Haven: Pizza, hiking, and the Peabody Museum

Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: As Dr. Maisel told me during my interview you can get “off shift and into the woods in 20 minutes.” New Haven is a great city to train in with opportunities for high acuity and academic medicine while also having access to suburban living, the ocean, and the Connecticut River Valley. Having grown up in southern New England, there’s fewer places I’d rather spend four years.

Random factoid:  I was a Pre-Veterinarian major for undergrad because I applied with too many credits from the Army to be ‘undecided’ but couldn’t be accepted into the college of science without a lab chemistry. The experience was one of the best ‘happy accidents’ of my life as I got to learn a lot more about the world around me through animal physiology, agricultural systems, and zoonotic diseases.

Academic Interest: Healthcare delivery & operations, health equity and social EM, public policy

Favorite activities in New Haven: Hiking in East Rock, trying different apizza, and hanging out at the Yale libraries (especially Beinecke!)

Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: My priorities for residency were to find a program serving in-need populations with robust extra-clinical learning opportunities and a strong support system. From the very first shift of my rotation at Yale in 2022, the faculty and residents made me feel like family. Every single person that I worked with showed a genuine interest in me and my education, and it was obvious from each end-of-shift debrief that they were deeply invested in me as a learner and a growing clinician. And despite the many EM legends that make up the faculty, the learning environment could not have been more supportive and made my experience all the more invaluable.

Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: In my final year of medical school, I had the chance to do an ultrasound rotation at Yale. I was struck not only by the teaching-oriented culture, but also by the approachability and friendliness of the attendings and residents. They were all very supportive and willing to share their knowledge - exactly the kind of environment I was looking for in my residency. As an IMG, I felt a genuine sense of warmth and inclusion. Yale also offers a diverse training environment with a variety of electives to choose from. All these elements made Yale a no-brainer as my first choice.
